Danish public libraries welcome the Syrian refugees

In Denmark, as in many other places, there is political debate about how many refugees we must take, and how to treat them when they came to Denmark. It is a political issue, but it is a fact that the refugees knocking on our door. In this context, the Danish Library Association describes the of libraries important for a successful integration and emphasizes it in a press release where they welcome the refugees .

The Danish public libraries have a long and proud tradition of being open to everyone. And of course the libraries also welcome the Syrian refugees that enter Denmark at the mo

ment. The Danish public libraries offers a lot of activities for kids as well as for adults, but most importantly; everybody is welcome at the libraries.

The president of the Danish Library Association and Executive member of EBLIDA, Mr. Steen B. Andersen says: ’We can’t promise that the libraries have sufficient copies of books in the languages required for all refugees, but we will still do our best to make everyone feel welcome. The Danish public libraries has for many years successfully been deeply involved in welcoming and integrating new foreign citizens to the Danish society, and as a result of this work, today immigrants, refugees and their descendents are among the most active library users in Denmark.

And of course the public libraries are also ready to welcome the new guests that arrive from Syria to Denmark right now, and we will do what we can to make them feel safe, kids as well as the adults. Everybody is welcome at the Danish public libraries’

The development of ‘open library’ in Denmark #wlic2013

In occasion of my participation in the World Congress for Libraries IFLA, I have made a presentation of the libraries in Denmark and especially the concept we call OPEN LIBRARIES. The theme of WLIC 2013 is "Future Libraries: Infinite Possibilities" and OPEN LIBRARIES is one of the possibilities. In Denmark, all the libraries is free to use, In the way, that all the basis services are free of charge for the public. In Denmark almost all the Libraries are funded by tax. The libraries are obligated to make all kinds of materials available, both physical and digital. Not just books. We have 98 municipalities and all of them are obligated, by legislation, to have a library and to finance it. Some of the municipalities have more than one library. We have approximately 450 public libraries, to a population of 5,5 mil. people.  Half of the libraries are closed in the last ten years, but the development has hopefully stopped now. It seems that development lead to fewer and few...
